Fishing in Scotland

Fishing in Scotland, Angling in Scotland, Fishing Holidays, Fishing Tackle Shops, Scottish Fishing Links, Scottish Angling Links

A fishing holiday in the catchment of the Rivers Spey, Findhorn and Devron offers a fantastic variety of beats and interesting pools to go fishing in for the three main quarry species of freshwater fish found in the North East of Scotland. The main species found in this area are the secretive Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta), the powerful Sea Trout (Salmo Trutta) and the majestic Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar).

Salmon Fishing:
Salmon fishing on the rivers of Scotland's east coast now benefits from the removal of river nets, stake nets and drift-nets. As a result of this the salmon rivers have become richer and much more productive with some recently recording their best ever spring and summer catches for a long time. Catchment management including the introduction of catch & release and a increased re-stocking programs by the relevant fishery boards have all contributed to this providing the angler with ample opportunity to catch the sometimes seemingly illusive Salmon. As with all fishing weather and river conditions play their part, in the spring fishing between the hours of 10am and 4pm are the most likely times to catch a Salmon, sometimes the most productive time of the day is through lunchtime typically between 12 and 2pm. Summer fishing is best in early morning and also early to late evenings unless of course there is good cloud cover or a summer spate both of which can make a big difference to day time catches. Any rise in water or spate can mean that fish will be caught at anytime.

Trout Fishing:
Scotland remains a world class venue for trout fishing, whether angling for wild brownies and sea trout or fishing on the many stocked waters. Wild brown trout fishing can be excellent once fish have recovered from their winter fast typically from May onwards. Traditional wet fly fishing is the most popular but don't be afraid to experiment with dryfly and do have a dabble at dapping an exciting and fun method of angling that can produce results when nothing else works. If you are allowed the humble worm on a bubble float can also be an exciting way to catch a brown trout or seatrout.

Stocked Trout Fishing:
There are numerous still water fisheries where anglers can fish for Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout and other species if stocked. Some of the fisheries have smaller pools suitable for youngsters who have never fished before, the ability to fish with worms or other bait in these pools is great for encouraging the youngsters to get into fishing.

Other quarry species:
One other fish that can be found in the area is the Atlantic Char, if you want to try and catch one of these the best advice is to ask your nearest fishing tackle shop. Some of the highland lochs around Tomintoul, Grantown and in the Cairngorms have small populations of these ancient fish.

When I come to Scotland which river should I fish?
The choice is never going to be easy with such a variety of rivers.

The River Spey is a classic Scottish salmon river rising over 80 miles inland near Carn Leac high in the Monadhliath mountains above Laggan. By the time it reaches the main riverside towns of Newtonmore, Kingussie and Aviemore it is joined by numerous tributories such as the Rivers Truim and Laggan hence the Spey quickly becomes a big river that can hold a lot of fish. Further downstream it reaches anything from 40 to 100 yards wide in places demanding chest waders, boats and good stout tackle to cover the river effectively. Don't let this put you off though because many salmon and trout lies can be covered from the bank or by shallow wading. Remember also that in the evening seatrout move into shallow water and are much more accessible than through the day. There are numerous tackle shops, angling associations and estate offices that you can book fishing from. The middle and lower reaches the Spey pass by Grantown, Cromdale, Carron, Aberlour, Craigellachie, Rothes, and Fochabers before flowing into the Moray Firth at Spey Bay. A place where you are guaranteed to see fish (probably under the wings of the Osprey) if you are not always able to catch them there.

River Findhorn:
The River Findhorn is a wee bit smaller than the Spey and is a beautiful river to fish offering a variety of terrain throughout the beats and interesting pools to fish. Another river with its source high in the Monadhliath Mountains, some 60 miles from the confluence with the Moray Firth at Findhorn Bay which sits between Culbin Forest and Findhorn. Watch this river when it starts rising because what looks like a small rise in river level can turn into a spate very quickly. In this respect the Findhorn is probably more dangerous than the Spey or Deveron. Of course when you are fishing you should always keep one eye on your escape route just in case. Don't let this spoil your fun though the fantastic scenery and sometimes seemingly inaccessible pools can be well worth the effort made to get to them. If like me you enjoy fishing pools others can't get to then the Findhorn will provide you with a good variety of testing situations. Exhilarating salmon fishing can be had from the spring run right through to Autumn. There is also an abundance of good trout and seatrout fishing within the River Findhorn catchment area.

River Deveron:
The River Deveron is similar in some ways to the Findhorn being smaller than the Spey but primarily runs over limestone bedrock which produces good feeding for seatrout and brown trout. Running through rich farmland there is a wide variety of insect life around to keep fish well fed and, of course, it keeps anglers amused choosing the correct fly pattern. Rising high in the hills above the Cabrach it is sometimes regarded as a spate river by Salmon fishers this can be disputed at times by trout fishers who prefer the settled conditions that produce fantastic bags of sea trout at night and thrilling day time brown trout action. The varied fast flowwing upper reaches flow over shingle and bedrock producing interesting variety of beats and pools. Producing fish throughout the season an end of year spate often produces the best results. The middle reaches the river settle into a meandering steady flow with some beautiful glides and deep holding pools which can hold fish all year round. These pools and glides come alive in May and June and July nights when Seatrout are plentiful. Have a go at night fishing if you haven't tried it, the results will astound you, if you are having no luck try fishing a mousie or similar large wake producing lure! From Huntly down through Maynes of Mayne, Turriff, Forglen, all the middle and lower reaches are ideal places to try this type of fishing. The lower reaches come into their own when the summer grilse and salmon run starts producing splendid silver fish straight off the tide. A great wee river for beginners because it is fairly easy to cover the water it is also a good test for seasoned anglers who relish the challenge of fishing for Salmon in new surroundings. The banks aren't always kept so well as they are on the Spey beats so the Deveron has a charming wild feel to it
